Things to Consider If You Want to Become an Entrepreneur - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Do you want to be your own boss? You will probably answer ‘Yes’ to this question, but if your sole reason for becoming an entrepreneur is to become your own boss, then you may want to change your way of thinking. Instead of wanting to be your own boss, think of yourself as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Then, be CEO of your career or profession. When you take the leadership reins to your professional development and career growth, you’ll be surprised how many see you and treat you as a leader. Is more free time your reason to be an entrepreneur? This myth draws in a lot people who want to become their own boss because they think they will have more free time for themselves. The truth is, you have the freedom to take as much or as little time off from work as you wish. And, if you choose a business that aligns well with your core values, you’ll probably lose yourself in the time, learning and actual activity of your business.   However, in order to run a successful business, you have to show up to work early every single day, and probably be the one to close up late in the night. You’ll also need some strong business skills or bring together a team of professionals who have the skill sets that you lack.   In other words, if you look forward to becoming an entrepreneur then be prepared to work more than you normally would if employed. Do you want to make fast cash? Is making fast cash your reasoning behind becoming an entrepreneur? Sometimes, and it is rare, some people do make quick money. The “usual” is it could be quite some time before you earn enough money to live off of. As such, have a budget planned out before you start your own business, as this will help you continue to live while you start on your entrepreneurial journey. Be patient as well with the business. For some, profits will start rolling in after a few weeks, others may wait for some months or even years before the business can take off on its own. If your answer is “No” to this question, or you have an I wont fail attitude, or you just dont believe that you will fail, then you may not want to become an entrepreneur. When you go into business on your own, failure is a big possibility. Just like you plan the finances of the business, you need to plan for the risk of failure. It doesn’t mean you walk around focused on bad times. Planning for failure means exactly the opposite; that you sit down and account for any unforeseen eventualities. Be prepared to run out of finances, supplies, customers, and any other risk. By preparing for all this, you will be in a better position to pull through should any of them strike. Are you persistent? More importantly, you need to be persistent. If you are one of those people who give up after not succeeding right away, then being an entrepreneur is probably not something you want to be. The problem is that the programs make it appear that earning passive income is a set-it and forget it proposition. For little money and even less time you can make a fortune. As a result, many people have lost money and their hopes of being an entrepreneur. So what is the real deal about passive income? In truth, no income is passive. It’s a misnomer. What legitimate business gurus mean when they talk about passive income is closer to residual income, where you create something once and sell it over and over. But items don’t sell themselves. Even in passive income you have to work to get people to buy. What’s different in so-called passive income is the exchange of time for money. In the traditional work world, you do your job 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year and get a set wage or salary. Service-based business tend to trade time for money as well, charging an hourly or project fee for doing a job. In passive income, the idea is to reduce time and effort while increasing income. However, reducing time doesn’t eliminate all efforts as the term “passive’ suggest. What Earns “Passive” Income? Probably the most passive of passive income options is investing. The idea is that you invest your money in something and the value goes up without doing anything. However, most investors I know don’t invest and then leave without a thought. If they’ve invested in real estate, they keep their properties in top condition and rented. If they’ve invested in the market, they study and research the market to buy and sell at optimum times. Royalties is another form of passive income. An artist writes music or a book and earns income on each sale. This too isn’t completely passive. Artists spend a great deal of time marketing their work. In the online income world, passive income comes in several forms, the most popular of which is affiliate marketing and information marketing. Both types of income involve regular efforts to market affiliate programs or informational products. If It’s Not Passive, Is it Worth Trying to Do? Passive income doesn’t earn income on its own, but it is still worth considering. Although passive income doesn’t mean no effort at all, it usually requires less work to earn income once the investment or product is created. Speakers, coaches and service-based business owners in particular do well by developing courses and writing books that earn money and help them market their services. Whenever you can earn more with less effort, it’s a good thing. But you need to be careful not to get caught up in the hype that you can earn money over and over without effort. The only people I know who truly have money without effort have inherited their riches. Everyone else, even “passive” income earners, works, but they focus their time on efforts that pay over and over with maintenance (i.e. marketing) not a straight trade of time and money.

Unemployed and holding out for your dream job With such high unemployment and competitive job market, does it make sense to turn down job offers? Some people might think it’s crazy that someone might turn down an offer â€" but holding out for a better job, in some instances might actually make sense. In a  Pittsburg Tribune Review article by Margaret Harding, Unemployed workers find job offers but dont always take them, she gives this information that might surprise many people: About 17 percent of unemployed workers have received at least one full- or part-time job offer, and almost all of those workers â€" 92 percent â€" turned down such an offer, according to a recent survey by Personified, a division of CareerBuilder.com. The reason most often cited â€" low pay. I agree with the author that in some instances it’s okay to be picker, especially if you haven’t been unemployed very long. But as time goes on you may need to rethink your opportunities. The market is competitive and sometimes a job that isn’t ideal is better in the short-term while you continue to look for a long-term more permanent job. Unfortunately many jobs out there right now are very low-pay. If you have a child that needs to go to daycare, sometimes the cost of working outside the home and sending the child to daycare doesn’t make sense. One of my group coaching clients told us about her brother who recently just got laid off. They have a baby who is 6 months old. With unemployment he’ll get $400 a week. Most of the jobs he has found will make him approximately $500 a week. With the cost of daycare, he’d be better off turning those jobs down for the time being. Sometimes it can be better to hold out for something better â€" higher pay, more aligned with what you are looking for, etc. But remember having a large gap in your resume can also affect your possibility of getting a job. Also it’s important to note that your dream job is not going to just land in your lap. You need to be networking and actively searching for it.
